DESCRIPTION

A novel linear generator constructed at Fountain Design from a specification provided by Edinburgh University.

This is a prototype for a series of lightweight linear generators designed specifically for marine renewables.

A 2m core of Permanent Magnets are driven along a 4m long section of coils generating 50kW at peak load. The coils are arranged to provide a 3 phase AC output. The Permanent Magnets remove the need for external excitation, increasing the efficiency of the generator and making it suitable for standalone operation. However, the use of powerful rare earth magnets requires specialist construction techniques.

The generator is currently under test at TUV NEL in East Kilbride with a variety of hydraulic cylinders driving the test rig.

The finished machine weighs in at 3 tonnes.
