Research and Development
Fountain Design Ltd have been commissioned by multiple companies to carry out research and development on their behalf. Being a small family firm we can build and test novel ideas quickly and at a fraction of the normal costs.
We are open to novel concepts and welcome all enquiries, especially those that mean we get to push boundaries.
Subsea contactless power connector
A fully sealed transformer with a cylindrical coaxial core arranged so that the inner part containing the primary winding can slide into the outer part with the secondary winding (or vice-versa).
Subsea High Voltage Generator
A permanent-magnet rotary machine where the rotor is suspended in a flooded space separated from the stator so that no rotary seals are required. The stator is contained in a sealed oil-filled stator housing and has a large number winding turns so that it generates at high voltage. The oil acts as both a coolant and a dielectric. Because of the high voltage, the output power can be transmitted over a considerable distance directly to shore so that offshore electrical equipment needs are minimal.
Bearing Material Testing
This desktop test rig can apply and measure the forces applied to the bearing pads running in sea water. Different materials can then be reliably compared for wear rates etc..
